Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)

The common hackberry is a deciduous tree typically reaching heights of 60-100 feet, though its size can vary significantly depending on its environment. Its broad crown often exhibits an irregular shape, with spreading or slightly drooping branches that may form bushy growths known as witches' brooms. The mature bark is distinguished by prominent corky projections. The foliage of the tree is dull-green and coarse-textured, with unremarkable fall coloration. Clusters of orange-brown to dark-purple berries adorn the branches.

This tree is utilized in various industries, including furniture making, athletic equipment production, and the manufacturing of boxes, crates, and plywood. Its common name is thought to originate from "hagberry," which refers to a marsh berry in Scotland. The sweetish fruits are consumed by many birds, such as quail, pheasants, woodpeckers, and cedar waxwings. Infestations of mites and fungi can cause witches' brooms, resulting in the deformation of branches in this and other hackberry species. Additionally, the leaves often develop rounded galls due to the activity of tiny jumping plant lice.

    Hear From Our Happy Clients

It is very difficult to find a company so diverse and dedicated in the various areas of landscaping as Paul and his team.

I have contracted work with Hynek Landscaping for over ten years. The variations of requested services have been numerous, including the following: Rough and fine grading, seeding, sodding, drainage tiling, front and back yard landscaping.

We have also contracted Hynek Landscaping for retaining wall construction for window wells, mid-height walls necessary for landscaping and variations in building elevations, and large walls requiring keystone block and geo grid for stability. No job is too small or too large.

I would highly recommend Hynek Landscaping for your landscaping needs.

"I have used Hynek Landscaping multiple times and have always been extremely pleased with the completed project.

As a realtor, I have recommended Hynek Landscaping to my clients when they need to present their home for sale in the best possible light. Someone's first impression of a home comes as they pull up to the property, the landscaping can make or break that impression.

I also use Hynek's for snow removal in the winter. What a wonderful feeling to wake in the morning after a snow and have the drive and sidewalks already cleaned and ready for the day! I couldn't be more sold on the quality of work provided year 'round by the Hyneks."

    Mary Oakley, Realtor

"Our experience with Hynek Landscaping was extremely positive. Despite our own efforts to “DIY” our yard, we were in need of professional advice. Paul came out it a timely manner, listened to what we were hoping to accomplish and offered many different options. His estimate was very competitive and his timeline for completion was nearly immediate.

Upon beginning work, which included installation of a retaining wall, running drainage tile and sod work, the job was complete in a day and a half. We have since asked ourselves many times why we did not contact Hynek Landscaping earlier.

We could not be more pleased with the work and have received many compliments, especially from neighbors. We will not hesitate in the future to make our first call Hynek Landscaping.
