Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)
Common lilac is a fragrant spring-flowering shrub with hundreds of cultivars available in various colors. Its sweet fragrance may be overpowering for some asthmatics. Suckers should be removed to prevent unwanted spread, and it grows rapidly. Best suited for cold climates, lilacs need winter chill for bud maturity but are vulnerable to late frosts. They prefer well-drained soil and suffer from powdery mildew. Insect pests include scales, borers, and caterpillars, while diseases like blights and leaf spots can also occur. Pruning the center improves airflow.
Light: Common lilac thrives in full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily) but can tolerate partial shade (2-6 hours of direct sunlight).
Watering: Water when top 2 inches of soil is dry.
